Conference Mauri Stone
At the end of NZAMT18 Conference in Whangārei, a mauri stone was handed over to Otago. The mauri stone came from the stream beside Whangārei Boys' High School. It was blessed by kaumatua from Te Parewhau, the local iwi. Mauri represents life force, and connection. So in the context of our conferences:
It represents the connections in the Maths Associations across Aotearoa/New Zealand and can be viewed as representing the different mathematics communities.
It fosters a sense of well-being and vitality.
The Otago Association consulted with Kai Tahu and with their blessing the mauri stone was mounted.
Hopefully, it will be a tradition that can be incorporated into future conferences, that the mauri stone is passed on from each Conference to the next.
