The September Problems for 2008 have been released.

Download the problems.

Download the registration form.

(Update, 16/12/08:  solutions available here.)

These problems will be used by the NZMOC to select students for its International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp to be held in Christchurch between the 11th and 17th of January 2009. At this Camp the New Zealand squad will be selected for the Asia-Pacific Olympiad and candidates will be chosen to continue to work in the training program prior to selection for the NZ team for the IMO competition to be held in Germany in July 2009.

Students should attempt the appropriate set of problems. Students of year 12 and those who have already been to a camp must attempt the Senior Division questions only. For years up to 11 and those who have not been to a camp, you are to attempt the Junior Division questions, but you are also encouraged at least to try some of the problems for seniors and your solutions of problems of the Senior Division WILL be counted.

It is not necessary to solve every problem — so please send your solutions and partial solutions even if you are sure that you haven’t got everything right. Make sure you name each page so we can identify your work.  A reasoned argument should be given for your answer to each question.

Calculators and computers should not be used to assist in solving these problems.  All solutions must be your own work.

Solutions, along with a completed Student Registration Form, should be sent to:-

Dr. Arkadii Slinko,
Department of Mathematics,
The University of Auckland,
Private Bag 92019, Auckland

to arrive no later than 25th October 2008.

Students submitting solutions should be intending to remain in school in 2009, so as to satisfy Regulation 2.2 of the 50th IMO:

2.2   Contestants must not be formally enrolled in a University (or similar post-secondary institution) and they must have been born on or after 21 July 1989.

They should also hold New Zealand Passports or have New Zealand Residence status.

Students will be notified whether or not they have been selected for the Camp by the end of November. Thanks to sponsorship, the cost of this camp is $350 (including airfares).

Good luck.
