Opening Ceremony
Thinking outside the square starts at 1 p.m. on Tuesday 27th September. The opening ceremony will begin with a Mihi Whakatau, speech of welcome. The format of this will be as follows
  • The Tangata Whenua, the local mathematics community will welcome the Manuhiri, visitors with a speech and waiata. Harry Romana, Principal of Mairehau High School and sometime mathematics teacher will speak on behalf of the Tangata Whenua, the locals.
  • On behalf of the Manuhiri, the visitors Nick Vella, Kaiko, Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Tamiki Nui-A-Rua will speak and in turn be supported by the collected audience singing Te Aroha. The words of Te Aroha are included below. Follow the link below for a sound file of Te Aroha.
  • The local Committee will then hongi with a group comprising the invited speakers and representatives of each of the mathematical associations in New Zealand.
