Mental Computation:  Giving students options!

James Burnett (ORIGO Professional Development, Queensland Australia)

The focus on paper-and-pencil computation in school mathematics has meant that students often apply a standard written algorithm when it is far easier, quicker and more appropriate to do the computation mentally. This session will examine the rationale for the emphasis on mental computation.  It will provide a range of activities and strategies to help teachers develop both the number sense of their students as well as the ability to calculate mentally using all four operations.
