Year 8 Theme – The Mathematics of Technology

These notes are for possible guidance only. If you are stuck, please ask your teacher. However it is likely you will discover a really interesting technology to base your poster on.

Some key technologies heavily based on mathematics are: GPS, cellphones, airtravel, cartography, Google, mathematical modelling, robots, rostering in public hospitals, public key cryptography, digital recording, DNA analysis, savings and loans, etc.

These are just some of the big questions about the The Mathematics of Technology, that mathematics can help us understand.

Year 8 Theme The Mathematics of Life (Years 7 and 8)

DNA analysis is important to crime scene investigations, knowledge of human and animal migrations, and many other areas of biology.  DNA analysis relies heavily on statistical methods, and more generally, understanding aspects of Life on Earth, benefits greatly from use of mathematical methods. This theme asks you to think of what mathematics may relate to an understanding of Life on Earth.

The following notes are for guidance only.  If you are stuck, please ask your teacher. However it is likely you will discover a really interesting topic to base your poster on.

Here are some of the questions associated with the mathematics Life category which you could think about for your poster (go to the Allan Wilson Centre website for more information)

  • The mathematics of languages: how many languages are there, how many languages are being lost each year, how do people communicate in Facebook, how do words evolve, what are the main languages in the world and how are these changing, how are these ideas described by mathematics?
  • The mathematics of DNA, population genetics, phylogenetics,
  • The mathematics of populations: how do populations vary, what about human numbers, fish numbers, rabbit numbers, etc? How do we know how many wild dolphins there are about the NZ coast? How do algae blooms form?
  • The mathematics of Evolution: extinctions, speciation, evolutionary game theory, how many people believe (do not believe) in the theory of Evolution and how does this vary in different countries?

These are just some of the big questions about life on Earth that mathematics can help us understand.

Year 8 Theme - The Mathematics of Planet Earth and Beyond (Years 7 - 10)

The theme "Mathematics of Planet Earth and Beyond" challenges your imagination, by dealing with the mathematics associated with our Earth, as well as larger systems in the Universe.

The following notes are for guidance only.  If you are stuck, please ask your teacher.  However it is likely you will discover a really interesting topic to base your poster on.  Here are some questions associated with the Mathematics Planet Earth and Beyond:

  • Why is it important to understand the weather and atmosphere?
  • What role does mathematics and/or statistics have in this understanding?
  • What are the rainfall and temperature patterns were you live and how do they compare to other locations in NZ?
  • What amount of rainfall is needed to cause a severe flood?
  • What are the likely effects of climate change in the future?
  • What are the latest predictions for temperatures over the next 50 years?
  • Does the Universe have a beginning or will it have an end?
  • How do black holes form and how can they be detected?
  • Where is the Earth located in the Galaxy and Universe?
  • How are the ages of the Universe and the Earth determined?
  • What is gravity?
